OLDHAM KRAMER MEMBER BARBARA KNAPIC CHOSEN AS A 2010 STEFANIE’S CHAMPION CAREGIVER

Award honors caregivers for cancer patients

(AKRON, Ohio) April 9, 2010 – When Suzanne Kaszar was diagnosed with lymphoma, she turned to her friend Barbara Knapic for support, although the two live 100 miles apart. Knapic took time away from her family and juggled her busy law practice to care for Kaszar. She stayed with her at the hospital, set up and maintained a Caring Bridge Web site, attended bone marrow biopsies and chemotherapy treatments and has been there through every step of Kaszar’s fight against cancer.

Now Knapic has been selected as one of Stefanie’s Champions for 2010. The Champion Award, established by Stefanie Spielman and her husband, Chris Spielman, recognizes an important factor in cancer treatment, the loving and healing presence of a devoted caregiver.

Stefanie gave the first Champion Award to her husband after he put his professional football career on hold to care for her when she was first treated for breast cancer in 1998. Stefanie’s battle with breast cancer ended last November.

Knapic is a member of Oldham Kramer and is regarded as one of the top workers’ compensation attorneys in the state.

The 11th annual Stefanie’s Champions celebration will be held at the Greater Columbus Convention Center’s grand ballroom on April 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

About Stefanie’s Champions
Stefanie’s Champions was established to recognize one of the most critical factors in surviving cancer: loving, unwavering support. In Stefanie’s case, such support during her battle with breast cancer came from her husband, Chris. That is why Stefanie gave him the very first Champions award. It was her hope that every cancer survivor can name someone who stood by them, gave them courage and helped them through. For information, visit http://www.spielmanfund.com.
